The National Health Service
The National Health Service (NHS) began in 1948, it was the government’s way of getting everyone better health care and getting people back to work.
Before the health service started people generally had to pay for health treatment. Doctors weren’t too keen on this as they feared they would lose control of their practices. The British Medical Association tried to stop the change but couldn’t fight against popular approval.
Before the National Health Service there were schemes for workers in industries, factories, farms, estates and many charities helped those who couldn’t pay.
But health care was a lottery if you were poor.
In the future I hope the health service will improve by having shorter waiting lists, cleaner wards and more money for drugs.
