National Health Service
The NHS was founded in 1947 by the NHS Act. This did originate free health. The idea of a free National Health Service was thought up by Nigel Haywood-Smith. His initials were the original idea for it to be called the NHS. Prescription charges were introduced in 1951. It was founded to be “free at a point of need”, and to provide a universal service for all based on clinical need, not ability to pay.
There is 14 health boards in Scotland each with a region to take care of. Half of Scotland’s land mass in covered by provisional pay!
The types of operations have changed with advances in technology and antibiotics and anaesthetics being introduced. Organ transplants have also been introduced. New medicinal discoveries have helped people stay in the hospital for less time, with some people not going in at all with the help from home scheme. This idea was originally thought up by Aneurin Bevan, the state Health Secretary. He thought that the way forward was each resident in the United Kingdom would be signed up to a General Practitioner or a GP. This has also advanced with a lot more IT being introduced.
Infection is the current topic of the NHS with hospital diseases rising recently.
I hope that the NHS comes over its small problems and I think it is a bright future for the NHS. With more advances in technology I think the United Kingdom will only get healthier.
